Rotating Drum Filter (RDF)
The RDF’s manufactured by Wilpet Koi Products are suitable for Koi ponds as well as aquaculture applications. Rotary Drum Filters (RDF’s) are predominantly used for mechanical filtration or pre-filtration for the first stage of the filter system. The water coming from the bottom drains and skimmer is cleaned by the RDF before entering the bio stage of the filtration system. The big advantage of the RDF versus any other conventional mechanical filter is that the waste does not remain in the filter in the water but is flushed out into the drain automatically the moment the filter is clogged-up with all the waste. Through this process the workload for the bio stage is reduced significantly and the bacteria in the bio stage work much more efficient.
The RDF features a 316 stainless steel membrane or micro-screen of 40 or 60 micron mounted on a 304 stainless steel drum for strength and durability. As mentioned, screen sizes are available from 90 microns to as small as 40 microns. As water flows through the lower drum’s half, the small screen cells help to transport the captured solids to the backwash spray area for an intermittent and automatic self-cleaning process.
The drum is turned by a heavy-duty AC motor and a lubricated gearbox with a chain as the final drive to the drum. The Drum speed is standard at approximately 3 revolutions per minute; however, the time can be adjusted as required for shorter and longer backwash periods as required by the end user.
Head loss is around 300mm if pumped through the filter and will offer maximum flow rate for industrial filtration on Koi or Tilapia. Ideally, the water supply will be performed by gravity to avoid particles fragmentation resulting from water pumping through the pump’s impeller. The flow rate will however drastically drop if the latter installation method is used (gravity).
RDF maintenance is very low; the screen replacement is the only major concern other than the transmission, and both only takes a few minutes. There is nothing to lubricate and it significantly increases the filter’s service live.
Besides all these advantages an RDF provides a water clarity that can’t be compared to any other filter in the industry. All Rotary Drum Filters are supplied completely equipped with control unit, jet-pump as well as the rotational gearbox and drive motor combination. The entire filter operates on 220 volts electricity and use less than 250 watts when fully operational during the backwash cycle.

How do they work?
Rotary Drum Filters remove solid waste out from water using a fine mesh screen. The screen traps the waste particles, while allowing water to flow through. Sensors tell a corrected control box when it’s time to clean the filter screen, this process is fully automated no dirty or wet hands.
During the cleaning cycle, this control box will activate the drive motor to rotate the drum as well as the high-pressure pump for the spray bat and nozzles. The spray bar removes the trapped waist from the mesh screen and directs the waste into the stainless-steel waste tray connected to the 110mm waste line.
The control unit provides the following:
1. The set time for cleaning the screen from 0 - 60 seconds.
2. The duration of the time itself, time is fully adjustable for customer's own use.
3. Wash times are controlled by stock levels, screen size and flow rates.
4. The control unit will terminate the rinsing process as soon as the integrated system detects the required water level.
General maintenance on the Drum Filter:
1. Check general condition of the screen if still intact.
2. Check general condition of the clamps holding the screen.
3. If screen is brown and water flow is not as usual a 60/40 mixture of pool acid and water can be used or alternatively a high-pressure washer can be used to clean the screen once a week, once every two weeks or when necessary.
4.Check the strainer on the high-pressure pump is clean and free from any dirt built up.
5. If any unusual or loose parts is noticed please contact the manufacturer.
Do Not's:
1. Do not clean the spray nozzles when the Drum Filter is powered on as the high-pressure pump can switch on at any time.
2. Do not put your fingers close to the sprockets while the Drum Filter is switched on, make sure the power is switched off when you want to inspect the chain and sprocket.
3. Do not adjust the flood switch/'s when the water level is not correct or when the service pumps are switched off.
4. Do not set the cleaning time for less than 30 seconds.
5. Do not leave the Drum Filer switched on when doing general maintenance on the system/tanks as you may affect the water level height inside the Drum Filter.
6. Never Allow the dirty water to flow through the Drum Filter when the Drum Filter is switched off. The screen will clog, and the Drum Filter will flood. If you need to do that open the blank-off plates for the dirty water to flow freely through the Drum Filter.
7. Stay away with sharp objects from the screen as any damage on the screen means immediate replacement of the screen as the Drum Filter will not function correctly with damage to the screen.
